Cool-off & self-exclusion

If you think gambling is becoming a problem, consider a temporary cool-off (time-out) or a longer self-exclusion programme. In New Zealand, self-exclusion is administered by licensed operators under the Gambling Act 2003 and can restrict access to online and/or in-person gambling for a set period.

If you use a licensed operator, check that operator’s responsible gambling settings and support pages for time-out/self-exclusion instructions.

Warning signs

  • Gambling longer or spending more than planned
  • Borrowing money or hiding gambling activity
  • Neglecting work, school, or relationships
  • Feeling anxious, irritable, or hopeless about gambling
